Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Lite review: my first time with a stylus

For the first time after about 9 years, Samsung has decided to launch a version on the market lite of its flagship smartphone, the Galaxy Notes. What better opportunity for me, than I have ever had to deal with a more business-oriented terminal for a long time, to understand its usefulness? What does it offer more or less than the "big brother" we appreciate so much? Let's find out together in this full review of Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Lite.

Design, variants and packaging

The new Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Lite comes with an important size and practically equal to the flagship model, the Note 10 Plus (which we reviewed some time ago). However, it differs in the materials that compose it: on the back, in fact, we no longer find Gorilla Glass 6 but a polycarbonate shell, with its pros (greater resistance to shocks and falls) and its cons (absence of wireless charging and less premium feeling). It also loses its IP68 certification, which means it is not resistant to water and dust.

Let's see better with this convenient image the differences in size between the three models of the note 10 family:

From the front, the display is flat and with a slightly more pronounced chin (chin) at the bottom. The front camera is always placed with a central hole, while on the back we find a camera module with 3 sensors, located on a black rectangular plate with rounded edges: a design change that we then saw with the new S20 series. The frame is entirely made of aluminum and houses at the bottom the 3.5mm audio jack (absent on the older brothers), the USB-C port, the grill with the speaker (mono) and, of course, the stylus!

On the sides we finally find the keys for volume and for turning on / off, plus the trolley to insert sim / micro SD. The chromatic differences reside exclusively in the back, in the Aura Glow variants (more pearly and tending to white than the non-lite Note, but it will be due to the plastic), Aura Black and Red. The packaging of the 10 Lite notes it has an internal power supply 25W, a USB-C / USB-C cable, an accessory to detach and replace the tip of the S-Pen (with two spare tips) and a pair of medium quality stereo in-ear headphones (we do not find the AKGs of the top brothers of range).

Taking it in hand, it conveys solidity, but not that premium feeling that we find with the other two models. And it is a shame, given the amount at which it is proposed.

Cameras: versatile and convincing

In the rear plate there are three cameras from 12 megapixel different from each other for the goodness of the sensor and type. Don't worry about the “small” number of megapixels available. I understand that recently you are used to reading numbers like 48, 64 or even 108 megapixels, however it is possible to get noteworthy shots even with 12MP, as Sony, Apple and Google have taught us in recent years. In addition to the classic lens, we have a lens that allows us to obtain a 2X zoom and a wide-angle sensor, with a 110 ° viewing angle.

In optimal lighting conditions they give all three convincing shots, and allow us to operate in more situations. On some occasions the wide-angle lens made me turn up my nose, which perhaps tended too much to create the similar effect fisheye at the edges, an unrealistic rounding. With low light, however, the zoom sensor loses a bit in quality, the details start to run out a bit.

The 32MP front camera selfie, on the other hand, does its job without infamy and without praise. I would have liked a little more sharpness, not software. Here is a rundown of shots taken with the Galaxy Note 10 Lite:

The nib

Here it is the real plus of this device, the reason that could push you to purchase. In the past, to get a device with a stylus, it was necessary to spend a considerable amount, around € 900. The lite model succeeds, in theory, in making this peculiarity more accessible. But is the stylus really that useful? The answer is yes, if you have to deal daily with applications or software that require a certain precision or dexterity. At the end of my "trial period", I confess that the nib has practically replaced my index finger: once you get used to it, it's hard to let go. The latest version of the nib, by the way, is equipped with air gestures, and it's always handy to have a "bluetooth button" at hand for our selfies. The only drawback: it is not possible to use Samsung DEX at the moment.

Autonomy and performance

The processor that powers this 10 Lite notes it's the same as on the Galaxy Note 9, last year's model. At the time a top of the range, it has considerable advantages but a poor optimization of the battery, which tends to wear out faster than expected despite the 4500 mAh. With intensive use we arrive in the evening, but with difficulty. Fortunately, wired fast charging (I remind you of the absence of wireless) a 25w allows us to recharge the device by 50% in about 30 minutes. For the rest, the processor does its job well, keeping the device quite fluid.

I was not convinced by the fingerprint release sensor on the display. It is optical, and not always fast and accurate: I have often had to resort to the good old unlock with sign.

The AMOLED panel is in my opinion lower than that of the brothers, and the difference, putting them close, is particularly noticeable: less vividness and less detail. However, it remains a great product.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Lite: final judgment

The current list price is 629€, and personally for this figure I would opt for the older brothers, spending a little more. After a few months Note 10 and Note 10 Plus are already at more affordable prices, unlike the list prices which are higher than 350 and even 500 € for the plus. If, on the other hand, you have the patience to wait, this Note 10 Lite will also suffer a slight decline and will become an excellent purchase. A "low cost nib”Is an excellent advantage to have, especially if you use it mixed business / personal, or even exclusively business. The cameras convince, as well as the screen and sufficient autonomy, too bad the battery is not optimized to the highest levels by the Exynos processor.
