Surface Pro 7 review: the best convertible?

Surface Pro 7 is the last convertible to come out of the forge of Microsoft, a device that does not bring with it big news in terms of design, but that renews its hardware to offer excellent performance even in the most difficult and agitated moments. The question at this point is only one: Is the update enough to keep a place on the convertible podium? Let's find out in this review.

Microsoft Surface Pro 7 review: hey, I know that one!

The aesthetic is what we have learned to recognize and appreciate in recent years: metal body, low thickness - only 8,5 mm - and a weight that stops at 771 grams. We also find the stand with double zipper, that allows you to adapt Surface Pro 7 to any surface and, above all, to any kind of need.

Connectivity also ensures good versatility, not only Bluetooth and WiFi, but also the new USB-C port, flanked by a USB 3.0, 3,5 mm audio jack and microSD slot.

Let's not forget of course il display touch screen Pixel Sense, 12,3-inch and with resolution 2736 x 1824 pixels. The overall yield is almost flawless: the colors are vivid, the brightness is high and the viewing angles are really good. But be careful when using it in open spaces, where visibility drops a lot due to the particularly reflective panel.

And the keyboard? Here enthusiasm and bitterness go hand in hand. On the one hand, in fact, the Signature Type Cover, that we've got to try extensively over the past couple of weeks, lets work in total comfort, on the other hand, however, there is a factor that cannot be overlooked: it is not included in the package. Indeed, to take it home you will have to spend another 184,99 euros. In short, Microsoft continues to consider the keyboard an optional, just like the Surface Pen. However, there is a fundamental difference: the stylus, however useful, is not essential, the Signature Type Cover instead yes. Browsing, taking notes, creating documents, are all operations that without the keyboard would be unnecessarily complicated, especially after spending at least 919 euros for the purchase of the device.

A version for everyone

We come to the main novelty: the hardware. Surface Pro 7 in fact comes with XNUMXth Generation Intel Core processors with Ice Lake architecture, flanked by 4, 8 or 16 GB of RAM and a storage space ranging from 128 GB to 1 TB. The latter, I remind you, can be further expanded using the aforementioned slot for the microSD.

We got our hands on the variant with Intel Core i5, 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal memory, a configuration that fits perfectly with our work routine, made up of texts on Wordpress, emails to go, video editing in Full HD and some images created and modified with Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator. in conclusion, the performances are absolutely promoted, but be careful we overdo it. Yes to editing with Premiere Pro but don't expect to be able to handle other heavy programs like those included in the Adobe suite at the same time.

On the other hand, the cooling system, further improved to guarantee, was promoted with flying colors absolutely average temperatures. Also take into account a fundamental fact: drawing apart, you will never really be in contact with the Surface Pro 7. In fact, during normal office activities you will find yourself using the Signature Type Cover - connected only magnetically to the convertible - or any other keyboard external. Therefore, noticing the slight increases in temperature is almost impossible.

Don't forget the charger

I took the Surface Pro 7 with me everywhere for two weeks. I used it at press conferences, exploited it on the train, it was my PC in the office and it even kept me company on the sofa. There hasn't been a single occasion when I wished I had another notebook: Microsoft's terminal is so versatile that it really adapts to any situation. The low weight then makes it easy to carry, which really makes you want to always keep it in your backpack.

This does not mean that the Redmond convertible is perfect. In reality the device seems to have done a step back in terms of autonomy.  With intensive use you will cover about 3 hours, while a mild use will allow you to get to 7/8 hours. If you work with demanding schedules, I recommend that you never leave the charger at home.

Microsoft Surface Pro 7 review: buy it or not?

Surface Pro 7 is undoubtedly the benchmark for convertibles. It is for its - obvious - integration with Windows 10, for the further improved performance, for the excellent display and, above all, for the extreme versatility it offers. All this makes it perfect for those who work a lot on the go, but also for students who are looking for something that can help them in their studies without losing sight of entertainment.

Microsoft should pay a little more attention to the competition, however, that tries to conquer the market by focusing on the shortcomings and defects of this terminal. I'm talking about autonomy, the absence of the keyboard inside the package and the now important frames around the display.
