Xbox will automatically mute your TV when you plug in headphones

Microsoft has just deployed an update for its Insiders with a new feature expected by the community since the release of the console. It solves one of the biggest problems for players who regularly use headsets.

As part of its Alpha Skip-Ahead program for Xbox Insiders, Microsoft has rolled out a feature that allows automatically mute the sound of your speakers or your television if you plug in headphones. This is something that the PS5 had been doing it for a long time, but that Microsoft had so far never made available on its console.

So far, when you plug a headset into your Xbox, be it a wired or wireless headset, your TV or your speakers will continue to reproduce sound, even though it is now also available in your headphones. For example, players had to mute their television so as not to hear their games duplicated. Fortunately, we now know that this problem will be resolved soon.

How to activate the new feature on my Xbox?

For now, Xbox Insiders will be able to enable this new feature in the additional settings menu. All you have to do is check "Mute the TV speakers when the headphones are connected" to activate it. It will probably be several weeks before this one becomes available to all users outside of the Insider program.

In addition to fixing this issue with headsets, Xbox has also added a new option for Insiders to “Audio Tests and Details”. This will work in a similar way to the option of video tests which allow you for example to know if your television is compatible with Dolby Vision technology or 120 Hz refresh rate in 4K (requires an HDMI 2.1 port). So you will now know if your TV is compatible with different formats and audio settings such as Dolby Atmos or Dolby Digital Surround.

Finally, this update also brings a new accessibility feature: color blind filters. This will allow the filters to be applied across the entire Xbox, and not just on certain games. You should therefore also be able to enjoy it while watching a movie or navigating the menus. Xbox is also announcing new games for its Game Pass at the end of the year, including Age of Empire 4 and Forza 5.
