Xiaomi Mi Band 5 review. Does it make sense to buy it?

Xiaomi Mi Band 5 review

Smartwatches are not suitable for everyone. There are those who prefer more compact and essential products and it is for them that they exist and proliferate Fitness bands. We are talking about those smart bracelets that track physical activity and show notifications in a simple and intuitive way, without advanced features or a complex operating system.
It also belongs to this category Xiaomi Mi Band 5, the latest version of the fitness band that has managed to conquer millions of users thanks to a super competitive price and extreme usability.

But what is this new variant like? Is it worth buying? We talk about it in this review.

What has changed?

Xiaomi Mi Band 5 review. Does it make sense to buy it?Esthetically Mi Band 5 looks a lot like its predecessor: the central body is identical, we have the same soft touch button under the display and the strap, comfortable and thin, provides the same coupling mechanism. The impermeability is also unchanged with Xiaomi Mi Band 5 which reaches up to 5 atmospheres.

So what's new? First of all the weight. Let's go from 22 grams of Mi Band 4 to 12 of the new model, which is thus even more portable both day and night. Reverse trend for display getting bigger: the screen is now a 1,1 "AMOLED with a resolution of 126 x 294 pixels and a good brightness. It won't always be easy to view information in direct sunlight but overall we were quite happy.

Finally, no news on the hardware front. We always find the Bluetooth 5.0 and the heartbeat sensor while NFC and GPS are still missing.

Xiaomi Mi Band 5 review: software and application

Xiaomi Mi Band 5 review. Does it make sense to buy it?Using Xiaomi Mi Band 5 is very simple: You just have to swipe vertically to switch between screens.
The first is State, which includes calories, km traveled and steps. We didn't find it particularly accurate; in reverse, we happened to find ourselves with several more steps, the fault of the system based solely on the accelerometer and the absence of GPS.
The second screen is the PAI (Personal Activity Index), a new physiological activity index that combines heart rate, intensity of daily activity and personal data.
We then have the Heart rate, which turned out to be quite accurate, the Notifications, the possibility of measuring the index of Stress and Breathing, which guides you to facilitate relaxation. They are not missing Clusters, designed to track your menstrual cycle, Events, to have all kinds of reminders at hand, the weather e Work out, which provides 11 different activities, from running to yoga through swimming and free exercise.
Finally we have More, which includes alarms, music, stopwatch, timer and camera. No, not because it is included but because you can take pictures remotely using the Mi Band 5 as a small remote control. In the same menu you will also find the settings related to the display, to the detection of the activity and to the eventual reset of the device.

So you will have more or less everything you need to hand, but if you want to check the recorded data and access a greater number of settings you have to rely onMi Fit application. The latter, available for Android and iOS, contains all the statistics (physical activity, PAI, stress, cycles, sleep and heart rate), allows you to start the workout by tracking the position with the GPS of the smartphone and helps you define which notifications to receive on the bracelet. You can also use the app for download and create new watch faces, set heart rate monitoring, change languages and much more.

Autonomy

Xiaomi Mi Band 5 review. Does it make sense to buy it?The Mi Band 5 battery is 125 mAh and Xiaomi promises up to 14 days of autonomy. In fact, with a few active notifications and frequent heart rate monitoring, we got to cover about 7 days. Not bad but we expected a little more.

Once discharged, you can recharge your fitness band using the magnetic clip cable included in the package.

Xiaomi Mi Band 5 review: buy it or not?

When compared to the previous model it is clear that Xiaomi Mi Band 5 does not represent a revolution. We have though small changes that improve the user experience and that make this fitness band an excellent entry level product for anyone who wants to approach the world of smart bracelets or that of smartwatches. Con 39,99 euros you bring home a product that does it all: from tracking physical activity to heart rate, notifications and sleep tracking. In conclusion, Mi Band is still the undisputed queen of the low-end.
