Apple rolls out macOS Big Sur update to Macs and MacBooks

The macOS Big Sur update is coming to all compatible Macs and MacBooks. The rollout of this update is no surprise. During its Mac and M1 chipset keynote, Apple announced that Big Sur would be available on November 12. This update notably brings changes to the OS interface. If you have an installation error, find here a tutorial to get out of it.

Unsurprisingly, Apple started rolling out the macOS Big Sur update on November 12. The date was formalized on November 10, during Apple's last keynote. This keynote was dedicated to the Mac universe. The firm presented its first chipset for its computers there. It is called M1. And it has lifted the veil on the first three platforms that will benefit from this chipset: the Mac Mini, the MacBook Air and the 13-inch MacBook Pro.

The macOS Big Sur update, which therefore succeeds Catalina, is obviously free (the days when macOS updates were paid for are long gone). The archive weighs Go 12,6. It is therefore not a "small" update. It includes changes not only to the operating system interface, but also new versions of system applications, such as Messages, Safari and Maps.

Compatible with many Mac and MacBook models

This update is compatible with many Macs. Here is the list of the oldest Macs compatible with Big Sur. Find in this list your Mac and check its release date (apple menu > About this Mac). If it is the same or more recent than the one indicated below, you are concerned:

  • iMac 2021
  • iMac Pro 2021
  • Mac Pro 2013
  • Mac Mini 2021
  • MacBook Air 2013
  • MacBook Pro 2013
  • MacBook 2021

How do I manually download the update?

If you own a Mac compatible with this version, you have three ways to manually initiate the download.

Via the System Preferences menu

  • Open System Preferences
  • In the second part of the menu, find Software update

Through the About this Mac window

  • Open the Apple menu
  • Choose About this Mac
  • Click on Software Updates to return to the previous screen

Via the Mac App Store

  • Open the Mac App Store (Mac App Store version).
  • Search in the search engine (top left this time) " Big Sur macOS ».
  • Among the search results you will find macOS update and click Show
  • Click on " get »At the top right to start the download.

If you've opted to automatically update your Mac, you can also wait for your Mac to download it in the background and install it for a while. A restart is required to apply some changes. Make sure all your documents are backed up.

How to unlock the Mac in the event of an installation error?

The update was available on November 12. And many users have rushed to get it. Result: the server which manages the deployment of the file did not hold the load. Numerous comments have popped up on Reddit to alert Mac owners that there may be a problem with the download. For our part, we did not encounter any problem while retrieving the archive.

On the other hand, we noticed within the editorial staff an error during the installation. If the Update utility tells you that an error has occurred, there are parasitic files in the temporary Updates folder. Here is the procedure to follow to get everything back to normal:

  • Restart your mac in recovery mode (press Command + R during the boot phase)
  • Go to Utilities> Terminal
  • Type the csrutil disable command and press Starter
  • Restart your mac
  • Once in Catalina, open the Port (if you can't find it, search for it via Spotlight simultaneously pressing Cmd + Space)
  • Type sudo rm -rf / Library / updates / * and validate by pressing Starter
  • Once again restart your mac in recovery mode and open Port
  • Enter the csrutil enable command then validate
  • Restart your computer
  • Relaunch the update search (with one of the methods indicated above)

This time, you should no longer encounter an error!
