Hisense O8B review: great OLED, reasonable price

In the last year we have had in our hands OLED TV of the highest profile, all united by one element: a price above 2000 euros. Hisense O8B however it is different. The first TV of the Chinese giant based on OLED technology costs less than 1500 euros, an absolutely reasonable price considering what this TV offers. We talk about it in this review.

Password: sobriety

Hisense O8B is a TV without frills. In fact, it comes with a simple but elegant metal base, almost impalpable frames and a small silver addition, located at the bottom left and hosting the company logo and the status LED.

Assembling all this is very easy: 4 screws allow you to attach the stand to the 55 inch panel, after that you will have to place the TV and connect all the cables you need. The operation will take you about 10 minutes. In short, a few steps, a few tools and above all no swearing before starting to use it.

Once assembled you will notice two elements: first of all Hisense O8B is incredibly solid and really well built and, secondly, it offers all the connectivity you need, part of which is hidden by a plastic cover that you can easily remove. In total you have 4 HDMI, 2 USB, 1 optical out, 1 audio in, 1 composite and an Ethernet port. Add to this dual-band WiFi and Bluetooth. In short, a nice endowment concentrated in the lower part of the TV, the part that also houses a small joystick of dubious utility. Yes, because this tiny lever allowed me to move around the menus and to lower / raise the volume. All operations that I can - and, above all, I prefer - to carry out with the remote control.

I take this opportunity at this point to also dedicate a few words to the remote controller of this smart TV. The remote control Hisense O8B is incredibly compact, aluminum clad and powered by 2 AAA batteries. To be particularly useful are the 4 keys dedicated to Netflix, YouTube, Prime Video and Rakuten TV, as well as i 2 customizable buttons that you can associate with the apps and services you use most. Finally, I would like to point out the presence of a button dedicated to voice commands which, at present, do not seem to be really supported. An implementation that I hope will be done in the near future but which I haven't really missed.

Finally, there is another way to control your TV: the application. Available for iOS and Android, Remote NOW it can replace the classic remote control, allowing you to use your smartphone to change channels, select the input you need, start an application and even share content on your gallery. Ideal for showing your vacation photos and videos to friends and family.

Minimal and intuitive

Once you turn on the TV you will have to deal with VIDAA U3.0 AI, Hisense's proprietary operating system. In this too, the Chinese company wanted to focus on minimalism, placing it in the hands of consumers an intuitive interface and really reduced to the bone. A defect? Actually no.

The essentiality of the operating system allowed me to easily find everything I needed. With VIDAA U3.0 AI it is easy to install new applications, it is very easy to change inputs and it only takes a few clicks to reach the system settings. From here you can then choose how to view the images, activate the Dolby Atmos, scan the images and set the Parental Control. And these are just some of the settings available to you.

The field test

The rendering of this Hisense 08B is really convincing. The OLED panel guarantees excellent contrasts, vivid and natural colors and very deep blacks. All this without changing any settings. However, if you want to achieve even more satisfactory results, just change the mode. Two of the ones I liked the most: Cinema Diurno and Night Cinema, suitable for the homonymous phases of the day. Instead, a dedicated gaming mode is missing but you can get by extremely well with that Dynamics, which gave me some satisfaction with the Gears 5 tech test on Xbox and with Rage 2 on PlayStation 4.

It goes without saying that the best results in terms of quality come with content in 4K e in HDR, but don't underestimate upscaling. This Hisense O8B performs excellently in both Full HD and SD. In fact, during the rehearsal I was able to look at the first episodes of Willy, the prince of Bel-Air and complaining about the surrender was really impossible.

Finally, let's talk about audio. Hisense's first OLED TV is in fact equipped with two integrated 10 watt speakers, supports the aforementioned Dolby Atmos and includes an equalizer. All this helps you to achieve a rather immersive sound in any situation, although the overall performance depends a lot on the environment in which you will place the TV. Not only because the size of the room obviously makes the difference, but above all because the speakers are positioned behind and direct the sound towards the wall. This means that you will get different results based on factors such as thickness and materials.

Finally, I would like to point out the presence of the Automatic volume control, to avoid jitter when changing channels, and the option for lpanel update, to be used to reduce the effects of image retention.

Hisense O8B: buy it or not?

We already told you about it at the beginning of this review and I want to reiterate it now that we have to draw the appropriate conclusions: Hisense O8B is a really cool OLED TV. It is simple to install, it fits into any environment, it is extremely intuitive and the overall quality is really good, both with content in 4K and HDR and with those in HD or even SD.

To make it even more interesting is the price: yours 1399 € they allow it to occupy a unique position on the market, democratizing - as far as possible - OLED technology.
