Honor 20 Pro review: is it really better than its younger brother?

Twenty days ago, on these virtual pages, we were talking about the younger brother of Honor 20 Pro, a device that had convinced me in terms of performance but that had left me a little bitter in my mouth due to its price, certainly not very centered. During the test of the real top of the range of the Chinese brand, I therefore wondered if the situation was different. In conclusion, Is Honor 20 Pro worth the 599 euros necessary for the purchase? We talk about it in this review.

Honor 20 Pro: the technical sheet

Let's start, as usual, by rattling off some numbers and some technical features.

dimensions: 154.6 x 73.97 x 8.44 mm mm

Battery: 4000 mAh
Rear camera: 48 + 16 + 8 + 2 MP
Front Camera: 32 MP
Videos: 4K @ 30 fps
Operating system: Android 9.0 Pie with Magic UI 2.1.0

Almost twins

The similarities with the Honor 20 are wasted: the device is solid and robust, embellished with splendid colors - Phantom Blue e Phantom Black - and equipped with that side fingerprint sensor that so much convinced and excited me about Honor 20.

The display is also identical, a 6,26-inch IPS LCD with Full HD + resolution and excellent color rendering, as well as the absence - inexplicable in my opinion - of the IP68 certification.

What's different then? First of all weight and dimensions, slightly more generous than the younger brother. However, this will not ruin the experience of use: Honor 20 Pro is a handy smartphone and all in all compact.

The rear photographic sector has also undergone some small changes: the configuration here is slightly different compared to Honor 20 but that annoying protrusion seen 20 days on its almost twin remains unchanged. Yes, it is true, you can always "smooth it" using a cover but covering the splendid play of light on the back is really a shame.

The same performances

On the card Honor 20 Pro is more powerful than his brother because yes, we have the same processor and the same GPU, but the RAM reaches 8 GB and the internal memory, which I remind you is not expandable, reaches 256 GB. What changes? On balance practically nothing. The performance of the device is in fact practically the same as Honor 20 and give the user a fast and smooth user experience. The plus here is mainly represented by the additional storage space, perfect for those who confirm photos and videos locally or for those who install dozens of games and applications.

The software is identical, Android Pie 9.0 with the Magic UI, a rebranded version of Huawei's now famous EMUI that brings with it many interesting additional features but also graphics that need to be revised.

Finally, the autonomy is excellent. The 4000 mAh battery not only takes you to the end of the day but, with average use, will allow you to cover a full two days. All thanks also to the excellent software optimization work done by Honor.

Four sensors for the rear camera

There are 4 rear sensors of this Honor 20 Pro: the main one, the famous Sony IMX 586 da 48 megapixel, the 16 megapixel wide angle, the 3 MP 8x optical zoom and finally the 2 megapixel macro.

How they behave? Incredibly good. The main sensor in fact allows you to take it home shots defined and with bright colors, without necessarily resorting to the help of artificial intelligence.

The wide-angle sensor is equally satisfying and accompanied by a distortion on the sides really minimized, while zoom - optical up to 3x and digital up to 30x - it is stabilized, so you don't have to go crazy to center the subject even at great distances. The quality is then satisfactory, with the AI intervening with a straight leg to improve the overall performance.

We finally arrive to the Macro which continues to be quite useless. The focus is fixed at 4 cm, the resolution is reduced and the overall performance really poor. In short, in everyday life you will hardly use it and if you decide to do so, know that you will have to be extremely precise if you want everything to be in focus.

Finally, the front camera, from 32 megapixels, and the videos, which reach 4K and 30 fps and which finally boast good stabilization, as well as the ability to switch from the rear to the front camera during recording.

Honor 20 Pro: buy it or not?

I'd like to tell you that the price is right here and that the Honor 20 Pro is definitely capable of beating the competition, but that wouldn't be realistic. Just like his brother he could have found the right place for 100 euros less because at € 599 beating opponents is difficult. Suffice it to say that with 50 euros more you can now take the Huawei P30 home.

Said this, I can only promote the device. It has a great display, guarantees incredible performance and boasts a versatile and convincing photographic compartment. The typical device that at an adequate discount could be snapped up.
