THEApp at TikTok returns once again to change its policy to ensure the safety and well-being of users. Just yesterday, in fact, the platform announced a series of updates to the "Community Guidelines" for expressly prohibit misgendering, deadnaming and misogyny. In addition to some changes that will involve the removal of all the content that promotes - and glorifies - an unhealthy lifestyle. This means that users will no longer be exposed to videos regarding short-term fasting or excessive exercise. In short, TikTok seems willing to change. Indeed, it wants to become the virtual place where users can feel safe.

TikTok: App modifies the "Community Guidelines" for user safety

The TikTok App is working on two fronts to make sure that users have a peaceful and safe experience on the platform. On the one hand, it announced a series of new measures for protect the LGBTQ community and women from harassment and hate speech. And on the other, it is working to reduce the dissemination of content that leads to the emergence of eating disorders in younger users. But let's try to analyze things in order. In a recent post published on the official TikTok blog by Cormac Keenan, responsible for trust and security, reads: "We have heard from creators and civil society organizations that it is important to be explicit in our Community Guidelines."

In fact, in these days, TikTok has announced that it will modify its policy to ban misgendering and misogyny. In addition to deadnaming, i.e. the use of a transgender's name and gender before the change of sexual identity. An important update, which is absolutely necessary at a time when social media are pointed out as a place of harassment. GLAAD, an LGBT activism organization, was among the first to comment positively on the stance of the TikTok App. "When anti-transgender actions such as misgendering or deadnaming, or the promotion of so-called 'conversion therapy', occur on platforms such as TikTok, they create an unsafe environment for LGBTQ people online and too often lead to harm in the real world. ".

Following advocacy from GLAAD and @UltraViolet, and recommendations from the GLAAD Social Media Safety Index, @tiktok_us updated Community Guidelines to prohibit misgendering, deadnaming, misogyny, and promotion of so-called “conversion therapy” programs.https://t.co/lmxQNXYKM8

“TikTok's move to explicitly ban this malicious content in its Community Guidelines and to adopt the recommendations contained in GLAAD's 2021 Social Media Safety Index raises the standard for LGBTQ safety online and sends a message that other platforms that they claim to prioritize LGBTQ security should follow suit with substantive actions like these ". So commented the CEO Sarah Kate Ellis. In short, with these changes the TiktTok App stands out in the social landscape, where only Twitter so far follows a similar policy. But, as you can imagine, this isn't the only update introduced by the platform.

As anticipated, TikTok is trying to reduce the spread of content that promotes unhealthy nutrition. "We are making this change, in consultation with eating disorder experts, researchers and doctors, as we understand that people can struggle with unhealthy eating patterns and behaviors without being diagnosed with an eating disorder." So TikTok has announced that it will start removing all of those content that promotes intermittent fasting, or intensive training. Likewise, it appears that it will deal with content that promotes suicide in a whole new way. And will try to better manage it dangerous issue of challenges. Indeed, in addition to adding more details to the online challenges policy, the TikTok App will release a series of videos in which creators will explain to users how to evaluate the content they encounter.

In short, the platform is changing. And it's making it safer. According to a transparency report, in the third quarter of 2021 TikTok removed more than 91 million videos for violating the Guidelines. A number that may seem important, but which represents just 1% of the content uploaded. And that can only mean one thing: the platform's efforts are far from in vain.
