Huawei MatePad T 10S Review: really great audio and video

Huawei MatePad T 10S it's an affordable tablet with one really good screen and performance above average audio. Not the best tablet for those who want to play games. However, it offers excellent performance in video and audio streaming. The only problem is that many of the streaming apps are missing from the Huawei AppGallery. Luckily the company made up for it with Petal Search, the tool to search for .apk files to install any app you want.

If you use your tablet mainly for movies, TV series, comics, photos and music, the Huawei MatePad T 10S could be the ideal solution at an affordable price.

Huawei MatePad T 10S review: low RAM but excellent autonomy

The Huawei MatePad T 10S model we tested is the variant with SIM 4G, equipped with the good processor Kirin 710A with 2 GB of RAM and 32 of memory, expandable with microSD card. The amount of memory shouldn't be an issue for the average user. Even if there is no Google Photos to save photos and videos, between the Huawei cloud and OneDrive you should have plenty of space to remedy. The problem is there instead RAM. The tablet struggles to handle multiple applications open at the same time, slowing down when switching between them. The version with 3GB of RAM and 64 of memory should do better. Although in all likelihood it remains difficult to recommend for anyone who wants a replacement for a PC portable: if you want a product that can handle many browser tabs and use the Office package in a flash, you have to take a look at the MatePad Pro.

Both the Wi-Fi 802.11ac that mobile data is fast enough to handle streaming and video calls without major problems. The battery is from 5.100 mAh, which are exploited really well: it has exceeded 8 hours in the most intensive test phase, while it can last up to even two days for average use. In stand-by it took 10 hours to go from full charge to 99%. Charging takes place via cable USB-C and the power supply from 10W Supplied. Do not miss the headphone jack input, although we preferred to use the Bluetooth 5.0.

Amazing screen and sound

Display and speaker are the strong point of Huawei MatePad T 10S, offering performance well above average for this price range. The display has a diagonal from 10,1 inches. With a report in 16:10 which is perfect vertically for the browser and documents, turning into a mini TV by turning it horizontally. The bezels are thin, the resolution in 1920×1200 (224 PPI) really good. It struck us positively because it is very bright, although the automatic lighting is not always very smooth. Chromatic fidelity is also excellent.

The speakers designed in collaboration with Harman Kardon they are a very welcome surprise. The system Histene 6.1 with 3D surround and the Bass Booster they provide audio that really impressed us on a positive note. Despite the MatePad T 10S being a very slim tablet, Huawei has managed to deliver powerful bass with really clear highs and mids. We have rarely felt the need to wear headphones while watching a TV series and even listening to music (although the sound isn't as rich as a good over-the-ear pair guarantees). The volume is high, you can hear Spotify even while in the shower.

Huawei MatePad T 10S camera review

The rear camera of Huawei MatePad T 10S is a sensor from 5MP with aperture f / 2.2. It can record videos up to 30 fps in Full HD. In abundance of light it shoots enough to be posted on social media, while in poor light conditions a lot of details are lost. This tablet it is not meant for stunning shots but it does its job when for some reason you don't want to use the smartphone camera.

The selfie camera on the other hand is from 2 MP with f / 2.4 lens. It also has beauty mode, useful for "cleaning" the face before taking a shot, which however cannot be of high quality. It's just fine for the video calls.

Daily experience: life without Google Apps

The Huawei MatePad T 10S has a rather elegant design (the device under test has a gorgeous coloring DeepSea Blue) and a low weight of suns 450 grams. Holding it with one hand while typing with the other is comfortable, vertically you can use the keyboard with both thumbs if you have large enough hands. In general, we were satisfied with the ease of use.

The problem that cannot be ignored is the lack of Google Apps. AppGallery is missing some apps for both entertainment and productivity. Fortunately there is Petal Search: from the widget you can intuitively search for the app you prefer. If it is not in the Huawei store, you will find the .apk file in another app store. Huawei has equipped the MatePad T 10S with a system of control of external applications to be (as much as possible) sure not to install malware and viruses. Some problems remain: we could not use our progress saved on Google PlayStore in games for example. Others were arginabile: our favorite application for reading comics did not work but it was enough to install the previous version.

In general, it seemed to us that the biggest annoyances were in the "preparation" phase of the device. Once our favorite apps are installed, we used MatePad like any other Android tablet. In our opinion, the lack of Google services shouldn't deter you from buying.

Great for entertainment

Games in 2D and simpler graphics work great, while titles like Asphalt 9 (on AppGallery) and Fortnite they weren't responsive enough to have fun playing. The Office app works well, even if the MatePad T 10S is better suited to replace the PC occasionally than to become a real tool for school and work. Great for instead streaming video e audio: We found ourselves watching several episodes of a sitcom on SkyGo, then watching the NBA Finals live. Everything runs smoothly and there audio and video quality is superb.

Huawei MatePad T 10S review: buy it or not?

This tablet is not suitable for anyone looking for a device to play games or to take pictures and videos. However it is perfect for read comics, the newspaper and some ebooks (although we used the "eye protection"That one"eBook“, Which makes the screen black and white). It excels at streaming: if you want to sit comfortably in the armchair watching a TV series, you don't need to spend more. Those who want to use it for work and school should consider the 3GB RAM version.

The version with 2GB + 32GB costs €209,90 in WiFi-only version, while the LTE costs €249,90. The one from 3 GB + 64 GB instead starts from 229,90 euros, to get to € 279,90 for the LTE one. At these prices, the Huawei MatePad T 10S is a bargain. If you find it obvious, it is an opportunity not to be missed.
