iPhone 6S will receive iOS 15: one of the longest-lived smartphones

THEiPhone 6S will accomplish six years this September, that is to say almost an eternity in the world of smartphones. If you've managed to keep one alive for that long, there is good news: iPhone 6s is eligible for the iOS 15 update which will be released to the public in the fall. The first generation iPhone 6S, 6S Plus and SE, all of which came with iOS 9, will be among the oldest devices to receive an iOS update.

Six years is an incredible lifespan for a mobile device and definitely put the iPhone 6S in the running for the longest supported phone to date. the iPhone 5S was five years old when it received the latest update, with iOS 12, but it was not compatible with iOS 13. On the Android side, Samsung recently worked to improve the longevity of its devices by offering four years of security support for some smartphones. But six years of OS updates and security support put the 6S on a completely different plane.

To be sure, there are a lot of new features that won't work with the processor A9 Bionic del 6S. Features like Google Lens-like visual search, the Live text in the photos, the portrait mode in FaceTime and immersive walking directions in Maps they will not be available to 6S users, as they all require a device with an A12 Bionic chip, as in the iPhone XS and XR or later.

As The Verge reports, it is also possible that newer software will slow down an older phone with an outdated and less agile processor. However, that may not necessarily be the case - both Ars Technica and Macworld found no significant performance impact with iOS 14 on 6S. The biggest problem, as both testers noted, is that the 6S shows its age with a poor battery life. Furthermore, features such as widgets are less enjoyable on a 4,7 ”screen. These are not compatibility problems but the inevitable aging that no smartphone can escape.

IPhone 6S owners shouldn't despair though. With iOS 15 they will still receive potentially useful updates such as notification summaries and Focus modes to minimize interruptions during the day; FaceTime video and music sharing and additional privacy features.
