LG G7 review, the smartphone with wide-angle camera and boombox

We tried for a long time LG G7 ThinQ, the new top of the range of the Korean electronics giant LG, using it as the main phone to cover the fair E3 2018 in Los Angeles. We liked it very much but perhaps he still lacks something that allows him to enter the Olympus of must buy by right. We tell you everything you need to know about LG G7 in our Videorecensione (found at the beginning of this article).

LG G7 ThinQ: technical characteristics

Let's start immediately by reminding you of the technical specifications di LG G7 ThinQ. Above all, note the presence of the LCD brightness boost which favors excellent visibility outdoors and in direct sunlight, the dual rear camera with one of the two wide-angle sensors and the presence of the boombox speaker, equipped with a specific resonance chamber specially obtained inside the body of the device.

General performance (display, navigation, audio)

Le navigation performances are really excellent also thanks to the presence of the Snapdragon 845 processor. In short, from a top of the range nowadays we expect nothing but fluidity in the navigation between the apps and the various menus of the smartphone. The display, the audio on call and reception are also excellent. The speaker boombox di LG G7 it has excellent performance even if it tends to make the smartphone vibrate a little too much while holding it. This makes it a bit annoying in the long run just to watch a movie on Netflix. But if you just leave it on a flat surface, it really is a bomb. Finally, the presence of the 3.5 mm jack for headphones was also appreciated.

La battery on the other hand is what disappointed me more: 3000 mAh with the promise of a terrific optimization thanks to the artificial intelligence of ThinQ. With intense use at the fair, however, I struggled to get to mid-afternoon, finding myself with a scarce 20% at 16.00 You could definitely do better with the battery, friends of LG.

Camera: top during the day, meh in the dark

La 16MP dual rear cameras with one of the two wide angle sensors (F / 1.6 for normal camera and F / 1.9 for wide angle), it performs really well during the day but limps a lot in low light conditions.

You will find yourself really having great photos during the day with both sensors. Take a look here.

With regard to the wide-angle camera instead, LG stepped in to minimize the distortion. In effect, the differences are evident if we compare the result with that of LG G6 and LG V30. This way the images remain quite natural with only slightly curved lines at the corners. I suggest you pay attention to the corners of this photograph - taken inside one of the notorious American supermarkets - to understand what we are talking about.

Significantly reduced distortion compared to LG G6 and V30

As you can see from the shots below, the night is really a bugbear for this LG G7, which unfortunately does not perform very well in the dark: neither with the normal sensor nor with the wide-angle sensor. Really a shame.

[

Instead, the presence of the AI Cam mode can be activated directly from the camera menu that allows you to have photos "boosted" by artificial intelligence capable of recognizing a total of 19 types of different scenes. In my case, the colors of the food were saturated, a background blur was automatically inserted. Of course, not everyone appreciates this kind of software intervention. Certainly there is that many people don't know how to edit photos and maybe they don't even have the desire and desire to do it. In this way, however, they can get slightly more elaborate and pleasant photos to share with their friends and relatives on social networks.

[

Summing up on the camera, we can therefore say that the wide angle camera always has a lot of potential (it has had potential for years) but it still does not reach the quality level that we would expect from a smartphone that costs 845 euros in the list. In the dark then, we are not really there, both cameras are suffering, show a lot of grain, the detail is almost completely lost.

LG G7: buy it or not?

[

This is indeed a tough sentence. We are faced with a really well-made smartphone, excellently built, with a form factor suitable for almost all the hands of the district. Missing the "WoW" effect which is often what makes us lean towards a smartphone rather than another. This LG G7 does its job but with such a high list price (845 euros), we are a little off the market. It is true that on Amazon or other stores it is much cheaper, but the list price is really indicative. What to say? If you want to upgrade from an old LG smartphone (G6 or V30), think about it. If, on the other hand, you want to experience the thrill of the wide-angle camera, it could really be the product for you.
