LG Q7 review: elegant, ergonomic but underperforming

LG Q7 presents itself as the heir to that LG Q6 that last year was born to conquer the mid-range. Too bad it brings with it the same defect that had penalized the previous model. Which? I'll reveal it to you in this review.

Top-of-the-range build quality

Don't be fooled by the plastic back cover. LG Q7 is actually a solid, well-built device, equipped with a nice metal frame and above all resistant to water and falls. Think that this device has received the MIL-STD-810 military certification, which allows you not to worry too much about the classic daily falls.

Absolutely appreciable then the design that yes, it is not particularly original, but it is undoubtedly elegant and suitable for any kind of user. Add to this the rounded edges and the extreme fusion of the materials used, elements that make it really handy and ergonomic. In short, once picked up you will find it easy to manage and absolutely not slippery. The only flaw concerns the always hated fingerprints: unfortunately the back cover of LG Q7 tends to get dirty very quickly, but you just need a small cloth - also included in the package - to clean it.

The front of this smartphone then houses a 18-inch FullVision (9: 5,5) display with Full HD + resolution. The screen performs quite well in everyday life, thanks to a decent maximum brightness and a good panel rendering. The sides of LG Q7 instead are occupied by the on and off button, by those dedicated to the volume (yes, there are two and no, I didn't particularly like them), by the USB Type-C connector, by the speaker and by the always appreciated jack from 3,5 mm. Finally, on the back cover we find the fingerprint reader, to be combined with the still discreet recognition of the flight for unlocking the device.

Performance to forget

LG does not seem to have learned from the mistakes made in 2017. In fact, last year the poor Q6 had lost precious points due to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 435 processor. Today, history repeats itself. This time I have to point the finger on the CPU MediaTek MT6750S that yes, in the end it does its dirty job, but it never stops giving us a few unpleasant seconds of waiting. In short, perhaps it would have been appropriate to combine a slightly more performing processor with the 3GB of RAM present in this LG Q7.

The connectivity - decidedly good - and the battery, on the other hand, raise the fortunes of the device a little. THE 3000 mAh of LG Q7 should in fact take you to the end of the day without major problems, as long as you use it moderately. With intense use, however, you will have to resort to the usual powerbank already in the afternoon.

Finally, we come to software, the real strength of this device. Not only on board we find Android 8.1 Oreo but also the always appreciable interface of LG that results here fluid, intuitive and decidedly unobtrusive. Too bad for the security patches stopped in May.

An average photographic sector

LG Q7's rear camera - with its own 13 megapixel and the F / 2.2 aperture - failed to break through my heart. The colors are quite natural and the glance is all in all discreet but a zoom is enough to see the contours vanish.

The same goes for selfies, which take advantage of the front sensor from 8 megapixel with aperture F / 1.9: good overall performance but watch out for micro-blur.

Finally, let's talk about videos. LG Q7 stops at Full HD and 30 frames per second, a real shame given that the competition does not struggle to reach 4K. Then I would like to point out the absence of both optical and electronic stabilization.

LG Q7: to buy it or not to buy it?

LG Q7 has on its side the excellent build quality, the great handling and an absolutely fluid and graphically pleasant software, but unfortunately it is not enough. It is not enough first of all because at the same amount - 299 € - we now also find LG G6 and, secondly, because the same range is populated by many good smartphones with better performance than Q7.

In short, on balance the device of the Korean house has its own appeal but the processor and the camera really risk penalizing him.
