The browser remains accessible to the most nostalgic, but will no longer be updated

Microsoft has just announced that Internet Explorer 11, the latest version, will no longer be supported by August 17, 2021, which is just a year from now. While users will still be able to use the software, it will no longer benefit from security updates or performance improvements.

The publisher also explains that from this date, its online services will no longer be accessible from the browser. Users will therefore no longer be able to connect to their Office 365 accounts, their Outlook mailbox or their OneDrive storage spaces.

Only the web version of Microsoft Teams, the publisher's videoconferencing tool, will be entitled to a little respite. Access will be possible from Internet Explorer 11 until November 30, 2021.

Microsoft draws a line from the past and focuses its efforts on Edge

Users attached to Internet Explorer 11 or web developers wishing to ensure proper compatibility of their sites with the good old browser will still be able to use it, at the cost of a "degraded" experience in Microsoft's words.

Microsoft is not going to stop there and will also stop supporting the legacy version of Microsoft Edge. The browser, released in 2015 at the same time as Windows 10, will no longer be updated as of March 9, 2021.

This version running under the Internet Explorer rendering engine has been replaced a few months ago by a brand new version which now works under Chromium. Microsoft will integrate it in the next major update of Windows 10 in order to facilitate the transition to this new browser, but also to force users' hands.
