Oppo AX7 review: excellent autonomy but hardware that can be improved

After having amazed audiences and critics with the very elegant Find X, a top of the range really hard to forget, Oppo has decided to focus on cheaper devices, presenting on the market a series of devices belonging to the medium and low ranges of the market. It also belongs to the latter Oppo AX7, an enhanced version of that Oppo A7 released last April. How is this new device? We tell you about it in our review.

Elegant but with some flaws

Design is certainly one of the strong points of this Oppo AX7. The coloring Glaze Blue and the bronze profiles of the camera and fingerprint reader certainly make it more original than many other devices of the same range. Less premium instead are the materials: the device is in fact made of plastic, but this certainly does not compromise its usability. Oppo AX7 is not particularly slippery, it is quite comfortable to hold and boasts a decidedly low weight.

I also appreciated the camera module, not particularly protruding and easily protected by the supplied cover, while it was less convincing the fingerprint reader. Yes, it is very fast and efficient, but perhaps a little too flush with the rest of the body. Two-dimensional face recognition is also available.

And the sides? On the right one you will find the on and off button, while on the left we have the volume rocker and the slot that can simultaneously accommodate the microSD and two nano SIMs. On the bottom instead we have the always appreciated 3,5 mm jack and the equally hated microUSB. I would have undoubtedly preferred the new USB Type-C, but the choice is, all in all, understandable given the users it is aimed at.

A little disappointing too the display, a 6,2-inch IPS with HD + resolution. Maybe a little low considering the price and competition. Also present a small notch to drop which houses the brightness sensor and the 16 megapixel front camera. In general, however, the screen is absolutely not bad and offers natural colors and a good viewing angle.

But pay attention to the polarization: wearing sunglasses and rotating the device horizontally you will not see absolutely anything. A defect that will not weigh on you in everyday use but that will give you some annoyance while taking pictures or recording videos.

Excellent autonomy

The performance of this Oppo AX7 is not particularly surprising. The processor Snapdragon 450, now a bit dated, it still manages to guarantee good fluidity. But watch out for games: don't expect a very high frame rate.

The connectivity is quite good, even if the WiFi is only monoband. Instead, it upset me the absence of NFC, now indispensable given the spread of digital payments. In short, no Google Pay. You will have to use the usual credit cards.

Instead, autonomy is excellent. The 4230 mAh battery in fact allows you to cover the whole day without problems. And if you usually use your smartphone in a moderate way, you can peacefully use it the next day without having to recharge it.

The ColorOS is not particularly satisfying. Graphically I am not enthusiastic and at times it is a bit cumbersome. However, there are some interesting features, such as the cloning of some apps - to use multiple accounts - and the use of gestures.

Camera to improve

The photographic sector of Oppo AX7 is not particularly surprising. The main sensor from 13 megapixel, flanked by the second 2 megapixel camera dedicated to depth of field, it performs quite well in good light conditions, but it irremediably loses details as soon as the sun goes down, instead leaving room for the very obvious noise.

Lthe same thing happens with the 16 megapixel front camera which behaves fairly well in the light but loses several bumps in low light conditions.

Oppo AX7: to buy it or not to buy it?

Oppo AX7 is presented on the market at the price of 249 € and is only available in the Glaze Blue color. A courageous choice, however, flanked by hardware and software that are not entirely convincing. Of course, the autonomy is truly incredible and the design pleasant, but this price range is populated by many other valid devices, perhaps equipped with NFC and equipped with a more performing processor.
