Jim Ryan, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, says that the demand for the PlayStation 5 appears to be "very sizeable" based on the number of pre-orders in the US. Ryan spoke to Reuters about consumer demand for the PS5 on Oct.27. He says: "The demand expressed by the pre-order level has been very, very considerable." Ryan said Sony sold as many PS5s in the first 12 hours in the US as there were PlayStation 4s sold in the first 12 weeks.
The mind-boggling pre-orders of PlayStation 5
While Ryan wouldn't talk about specific numbers in relation to PS5 pre-orders, it can be inferred that the number must be quite high. The exact numbers of the PS4 pre-orders are not known, but we do know that it surpassed 1 million pre-orders worldwide by July 2013. That is four months before the launch of the console. It also went over 1 million PS4, sold within the first 24 hours of launch. The number of PS5 pre-orders in the first 12 hours corresponds to the first 12 weeks of PS4 pre-orders. We wouldn't be surprised if PS5 pre-orders approach or even exceed one million in the US.

Ryan said it could end up that not everyone who wants to buy a PS5 on launch day will actually be able to find one to buy. There will still be more PS5s at launch of a PS5 than there were PS4s at launch, according to Sony. Said that Sony is "working as hard as possible" to get PS5s to store shelves for holiday shopping towards the end of the year.
