While Sony is working hard to produce more PS5s from the summer of 2021, the manufacturer does not forget its old consoles, and in particular the PS3. Indeed, our colleagues from the VideoGamesChronicles site inform us that the console launched in 2006 has just received a new software update.

Fact, this is neither more nor less than the sixtieth update of the Playstation 3, console which saw the birth of several flagship licenses of the Japanese firm, such as Uncharted or The Last of Us for example. Since his career ended in 2013, Sony has rolled out several drip updates for the PS3. No significant addition, however, was to be reported.

This update is no exception to the rule and does not include significant changes. Nevertheless and thanks to this patch, all console users will be able to enable automatic updates for their PS3. Until then this function was only available to subscribers to Playstation Plus, Sony's paid formula allowing online play.

An update after the PS Store controversy

As a reminder, this new update for the PS3 comes just one month after a major controversy. Indeed, Sony announces in March 2021 the closure of the PS Store of the PS3, the Vita and the PSP from July 2, 2021. With this decision, more than 138 games simply disappear (these titles are never released in physical format).

Of course, players have expressed their dissatisfaction, finding it intolerable to no longer be able to buy games in digital format on these consoles. Finally, the builder heard the various complaints and reversed its decision in April. Sony admitted their mistake and promised that the blinds for the PS3 and PS Vita will not close. The victory is not complete, however, since the PSP store will still disappear on July 2, 2021, as planned.

“After further reflection, it became clear that we made the wrong decision. Today, I am more pleased to tell you that we will continue the operations of the Playstation Store on PS3 and PS Vita ”, announced the CEO of Sony Interactively Entertainment Jim Ryan in an official statement.
