SanPa, Vincenzo Muccioli's children denounce Netflix for defamation of their father

SanPa, the Italian docu-series by Netflix that talks about largest drug rehabilitation community in Europe, has caused a lot of discussion since launch day. Among the criticisms suffered there is that from the sons of Vincenzo Muccioli, Andrea and Giacomo.

We recall that Vincenzo Muccioli was the founder of the community of San Patrignano, on the outskirts of Rimini. The children have recourse to the complaint against Netflix for defamation of his father. They claim that his alleged homosexuality and the dissolute life he seemed to lead was just gossip.

SanPa and the complaint of Muccioli's children

According to Vincenzo Muccioli's sons, Andrea and Giacomo, the Netflix docu-series “SanPa. Lights and darkness of San Patrignano ”says one reality that does not exist. This put the founder of the community in a bad light, Vincenzo, and the whole family. In fact, the Muccioli children explain that since the series was aired on Netflix, they no longer have any privacy.

Also, they are the family and friends of Vincenzo Muccioli himself to ask Andrea and Giacomo for explanations on the veracity of the affair. And this is how the complaint against Netflix for aggravated defamation, suing the producers, authors and director of "SanPa". The reason is precisely that of having inserted untrue facts and allusions and having lied about Vincenzo's death, according to them of AIDS.

What the authors of SanPa replied

Since the first day of the Sanpa docu-series, the authors have received rivers of critical about the way the community is talked about. However, they always made it clear that their intent was to highlight, as the title itself says, the lights and shadows of that reality, without any intent to please or denigrate anyone. Not entirely convincing explanation why this battle will continue in court following the complaint to Netflix.

The opinion of the SanPa community

Those directly involved in the “SanPa. Lights and darkness of San Patrignano ”find themselves disappointed by what the Netflix branded product wants to communicate. In fact, they explain, the story that emerges is partial and at times untrue.

The community itself hosted director Cosima Spender for several days, who was free to ask questions and talk to anyone in there. Community leaders have provided all papers necessary for a objective and informed reconstruction of the history of the structure of San Patrignano.

But, the leaders of the community continue to affirm, these data have been distorted in favor of a preconceived view of reality regarding the situation of drug addicts. In fact, at the beginning, the community had expressed perplexity towards the creation of a television product with such a delicate theme and with such a powerful media impact.

The final product was therefore spectacularized and simplified. The main purpose was that of commercial entertainment rather than serious documentary reconstruction that respects the canons of objectivity.

Less lights and more darkness in San Patrignano?

The San Patrignano community for drug addicts founded by Vincenzo Muccioli it saved 70% of the people who went there for help. And they actually found help, both by hook and by crook. In this regard, the title of the Netflix docu-series is emblematic precisely because it wants to highlight the negative and positive aspects of the place.

Testimonials state how helpful the recovery center was, at least until one of the guests was murdered, Roberto Maranzano. The son talks about it Giuseppe, to which the wound for the loss of his father in the community of San Patrignano reopened after the airing of the Netflix product.

Loss initially passed off as a fight between criminals over drug issues that ended in tragedy. It took 30 years to come to the bitter conclusion: Maranzano was killed by violent beatings by one of the community leaders.

Another truth that emerged from what looks more like a den than a rehabilitation center for drug addicts is the testimony of Nicolò Licata, initially a guest of the community and then hired for internal work. The man claims that violence by the perpetrators and by Vincenzo Muccioli has never been lacking, even if not against him. But he came close: on his second escape attempt, Muccioli had threatened to close it for six months in the bunker, a place also known as a "safe".
