Sony Bravia XF85 TV review: the 4K LED edge that doesn't disappoint

We've been testing the family's 65 ″ TV for some time Sony Bravia XF85, a TV with edge-LED panel, resolution 4K HDR which was able to surprise despite the decidedly low price. We tell you everything you need to know in ours review.

Sony Bravia XF85: technical characteristics

Sony Bravia XF85 is a 65-inch TV with a diagonal of 163,5 cm and a weight of about 26,5 kg, including the pedestal. On the market, however, it is available in six different cuts: 43 ", 49", 55 ", 65", 75 "and 85".

The display is a Edge LED with 4K HDR resolution, flanked by the now inevitable processor X1 that removes artifacts and 4K X-Reality PRO technology that allows you to have sharp and realistic images. On the other hand, local dimming is absent, which makes thesomewhat uneven panel lighting. Don't worry though, you will only notice it on static screens or with very dark scenes. In any case, you must be an image lover to realize the uncertainties of this TV.

Excellent connection park of this Sony Bravia XF85. At your disposal we have:

  • 4 HDMI ports
  • 3 USB ports
  • inputs for digital terrestrial and satellite
  • 1 component
  • 1 composit
  • ports dedicated to audio and headphones

Of course we also find the Ethernet input, the latest generation WiFi, a chromecast integrated and Miracast technology, which allows you to download content, stream movies and TV series, and stream photos and videos from your smartphone.

Finally, the audio is average, which uses two 10 + 10 Watt Bass Reflex speakers.

The remote, we're not there yet

It is not the first time that Sony has offered this type of remote control, in fact I think it is more or less the standard equipment of the entire latest series of televisions. It is one remote control not backlit which, however, on the front is composed of a “unibody” membrane capable of resisting the classic fruit juice accidentally spilled on the sofa. If you use it in the evening, remember to turn on the light because the keys are not so well characterized so you will not be able to rely on touch for routine operations. In short, change this remote because it is not really history.

Android TV: so-so, but it still has its merits

The remote control of this Sony Bravia XF85 allows you to immediately understand which operating system is present on this TV. In fact, here you will find the Google Play button, which means that you will find the usual on board Android TV.

Il operating system does not surprise us particularly. It is certainly fast and intuitive but by now it appears to be obsolete in design and in need of some updating (fault attributable to Google and not to Sony). Little changes even on the "content" front. The compatible applications are the ones we had already seen on Sony XD93 and A1 and include the usual Play Movie, Netflix, Rai Play, Amazon Prime Video, Dazn, etc, etc

Finally, I would like to point out the presence of voice search. This means that you just have to press the button on the remote control to search for movies and TV series using your voice together with Google Assistant.

Also appreciable compatibility with Google Home. Just tell him "ok Google, play Disenchantment on Netflix" and the TV - even when turned off - will immediately start playing what you asked for.

How do you see it? How does she feel?

Sony Bravia XF85 has a panel IPS LCD with Edge LED lighting. This means that the LEDs are illuminated by lamps placed on the sides of the screen and not behind. The result is a certain lack of homogeneity in the lighting. Nothing that compromises the overall experience but you will notice some flaws, especially with darker scenes and still screens. As I said before, however, you must have a very fine view to be able to grasp all this. Surely if you are looking for a good 4K HDR TV with an average price, this Sony Bravia XF85 is for you. There, you don't have to expect pure blacks, because this model is unable to reproduce them.

In general however Sony Bravia XF85 offers bright colors, detailed images and good viewing angles. We also liked the upscaling, not only with Full HD content but also with SD quality content.

Lato Gaming gives its best with PlayStation 4 (for obvious reasons). But remember to activate the Game preset which reduces the response time and use the HDMI 3 Arc port to have the best of 4K and HDR.

Finally let's see the audio. Don't expect anything surprising. The sound sector is average, a little weak in the bass but capable of offering clear and crystalline voices.

Availability and price of Sony Bravia XF85

Sony Bravia XF85 is already available on the market and - as I told you before - it is available in 6 different sizes ranging from 43 inches to 85.
As for the prices, let's start from 899 euros for the 43 ″ cut until you get to 2799 euros for the 75 ″.

Pros and Cons

In short, this Sony Bravia XF85 is a TV that amazes for the value for money which is still excellent even if it does not offer the top quality of the image. Sony itself positions it as a mid-range TV. If you are looking for something that truly represents the non plus ultra you will have to turn your gaze to OLED models but above all put your hand to your wallet.
