The Samsung Galaxy A31 review. A Super AMOLED for 299 euros

Samsung Galaxy A31 review

Samsung Galaxy A31 arrived on the Italian market a few weeks ago with the evident intention of replenishing the already substantial ranks of mid-range smartphones. It comes with a price of 299,90 €, a Super AMOLED display and an above average autonomy, but will these features be enough to outperform the competition? We talk about it in this review.

Super AMOLED is always a guarantee

The Samsung Galaxy A31 review. A Super AMOLED for 299 eurosIl display Infinity-U, with the central notch and the Super AMOLED panel, it is certainly one of the most convincing elements of this Galaxy A31. Its 6,4 inches, accompanied by FullHD + resolution, offer you enough space to browse, play and watch videos. We then bright colors and a brightness sensor that does its job very well.

The back cover, on the other hand, is made of plastic with the lower part characterized by a striped pattern. A nice solution at least on paper, since it helps to give a touch of personality to the device, but not very effective in reality. The gray color, the one we have had the opportunity to test these days, tends to hide the texture of the smartphone as well as the numerous fingerprints that are captured by this Galaxy A31.
The back naturally also houses the photographic module, slightly raised and characterized by 4 different sensors.

The bottom is dedicated to the 3,5 mm jack, the USB-C connector for charging and the speaker.

Finally, nothing to say about the build quality: Samsung Galaxy A31 results solid and robust, free from creaking and characterized by good ergonomics.

Samsung Galaxy A31 review: goodbye power bank

To move the smartphone from Samsung are 4 GB of RAM and the MediaTek Helio P65 processor. A combination that works for basic use but that has given us some headaches with the most demanding apps.
To compensate, however, the battery takes care of it. Its 5.000 mAh guarantee you a couple of days of use. So you won't have to worry about running out of water in the middle of the day or always having a power bank with you: there is absolutely no need for it.

The 64 GB of internal memory, the fingerprint reader under the display, the presence of the FM radio and the One UI 2.1, the proprietary interface of Samsung that supports Android 10 complete the picture.

Undertone camera

Samsung Galaxy A31 if presented with a 20 megapixel front camera and 4 rear sensors:

  • the main 48 MP with F / 2,0 aperture
  • the ultra-wide angle of 8 MP and 123 °
  • 5 megapixels for the depth
  • 5 megapixels for macros

How does it behave? We leave the evaluation to our expert.

The Samsung Galaxy A31 review. A Super AMOLED for 299 eurosWe are used to seeing great results coming out of the cameras built into Samsung smartphones. It is no coincidence that the Galaxy S series is one of the reference points in the photographic field for mobile devices. S20 Ultra is the latest testimony. That may be why we were a little disappointed with the performance of the Galaxy A31, which can be appreciated almost exclusively for the main sensor, the already known GM2. Auto HDR mode is capable of working good on the shadows further expanding an already good dynamic range and offering good results even in extreme conditions. The amount of detail it can capture with the main camera is decent too, but a little more sprint on color wouldn't hurt anyone.
The camera with wide-angle lens is not up to par with many other competitors, as soon as you move your eye from the center you lose sharpness. There is also a heavy one optical distortion barrel that creates an unpleasant effect to the eye. Noise is also a factor that negatively affects the entire frame.
Similarly, the modality does not reach the sufficiency either macro, which should help us for close-up shots but instead requires a lot of patience and a steady hand to find the right distance from the subject. The depth of field is very shallow, which can make it difficult to get good results in macro mode.

As on many other smartphones there is also a sensor dedicated exclusively to the Galaxy A31 depth of field management. If for selfies and portraits it may have difficulty in outlining the contours, especially of the subject's hair, with objects it works and also well. When you meet sharp edges the game is certainly easier, but the final result is certainly pleasant.

Galaxy A31 is certainly not to be indicated as a first-rate photographic smartphone, but his duty does it, especially by simply using the main camera or shooting when the lighting conditions are favorable. In conclusion, we must not and cannot expect to obtain who knows what results - for those there are the Galaxy S - but be satisfied with good photographs suitable for social networks.

Samsung Galaxy A31 review: who is it suitable for?

Samsung Galaxy A31 is a discreet device, suitable for those who are not looking for great performance but still want a reliable product and with good build quality. But it is the price to fool him: 299,90 euros are quite a lot when compared with Samsung Galaxy M31, which comes with better hardware and a lower price. Perhaps with a different positioning it could have been more incisive.
