Windows 10 (2004): May 2021 update may damage your SSD

Windows 10 (2004) harbors a new bug. Indeed, the update of May 2021 would have broken the automatic defragmentation utility according to the statements of the site Bleeding Computer. As a result, your SSD could be defragmented several times a day. A handling which in the long term can significantly reduce the lifespan of your storage medium.

It's no longer a secret that the deployment of Windows 10 (2004) via the May 2021 update was not smooth, far from it. If the patch brought its share of fixes, it also brought a lot of problems, such as unprecedented difficulties to access hard disks, or even unexplained slowdowns of the in-game system in particular.

If we thought that the biggest was behind us, it would appear that Windows 10 (2004) harbors a rather annoying new bug. As explained by our colleagues from the Bleeding Computer site, update messed up the Windows 10 optimization tool, which allows in particular to automatically defragment your storage media.

For some unknown reason and since the patch was deployed, the utility no longer saves correctly the dates of the last defragmentations carried out. Result, each time you start the PC, Windows launches the utility to defragment your hard drive and your SSD.

Damaging to hard disks, repeating this operation can be catastrophic for the SSD, which is very vulnerable to wear and tear caused by long data transfers. The utility is not completely off the table, however, since it is still able to tell the difference between an HDD and SSD.

Microsoft has deployed a fix

In general, the tool sticks to a simple TRIM process for your SSD, and rarely opts for full defragmentation. Only, if system elements are saved there, it is certain that the utility will defragment some SDD volumes by default. And in this specific case, your SSD may suffer in the long run.

Microsoft recognized the problem and deployed a fix on a new build of Windows 10 (19042.487) reserved for members of the Insider program. This patch should logically be offered to all users shortly. While waiting for its distribution, it is advisable to disable automatic defragmentation to protect your storage devices.
