Windows 11 allows Linux to run as an application, here's how

With Windows 11, Microsoft is taking a step further for developers who also want to use Linux. On the new operating system, all you have to do is go to the Store to download the targeted distribution, such as an application. Updates are also supported.

It has been a long time since Windows users need to create a new Linux dedicated partition on their hard drive. Thanks to the WSL, it is possible to spend from one system to another with a single click. Especially since the Redmond firm has considerably improved its solution in recent years, by allowing, among other things, to access its Linux files from Explorer or by supporting applications with their graphical interface.

With Windows 11 a new step forward has been taken. So far, no other choice but to enter a few command lines in the terminal to install the optional components needed to run the WSL. Not to mention the restart that had to be done to finally take advantage of Linux applications. From now on, just go to the Microsoft Store, as with any software.

How to install WLS on Windows 11

Nothing could be easier if you want to run Linux applications on Windows 11. Here is the procedure:

  • Go to this link to open the Microsoft Store
  • Choose your distribution between Ubuntu, Kali Linux, Debian and Alpine
  • Once on the download page, click Obtain
  • Wait for the download to complete. You will need at least 400 MB of free space.
  • You just have to search for your distribution in the Windows search bar

Note that all future updates will also be from the Microsoft Store. Previously, you had to wait to update Windows as a whole. Here again, the publisher has therefore made things easier. In addition, if you already have a version of WSL, the updates can still be done as before, although Microsoft seems to focus on its new method.
