Xiaomi Mi Smart Sensor Set review: don't call it anti-theft

Xiaomi Mi Smart Sensor Set does exactly what it promises: enriches your home with a variety of intelligent sensors that can help you automate your home. However, don't think of it as a real anti-theft device: at the moment, in fact, we are quite far from being able to use this kit as a real security system. I'll explain why in this review.

Xiaomi Mi Smart Sensor Set: ready in seconds

Let's start with the packaging. Xiaomi Mi Smart Sensor Set box includes a hub, two sensors for doors and windows, two motion sensors and a switch. Everything is extremely compact. The only one to have a slightly smaller size is l'hub but in reality it is a choice perfectly justified by the functions it is called upon to perform: it not only connects to all the other devices, but integrates a speaker and an LED light which I particularly appreciated. The reason? I used it as a night lamp, connected to the switch of the set that I placed on my bedside table. It was enough then to press the latter to have enough light to read or to search desperately for the objects in the room.

But this is just an example, one of the many types of possible uses. The sensors - by default already connected to the central hub via zigbee protocol and all come with handy stickers - they will indeed come integrated into the Mi Home app. Here you can define a series of actions using the “If… then…” formula.

A few examples? You can tell the motion sensors to send you a notification on your smartphone or when you open the front door you can access your Yeelight lights, which can be activated separately.

No anti-theft

Not confusing Xiaomi Mi Smart Sensor Set for a security system. First of all why the absence of video cameras is felt and, secondly, why the hub speaker is not particularly powerful. To give you a practical example: at the highest level I hardly felt it on the other side of my (small) apartment. So I cannot guarantee that it will be heard by the neighbors.

Sure, you can get notifications when someone passes sensors or opens doors and windows in your absence, but nothing too effective. In short, you can deduce that you have an intruder but you will not be able to see or discourage him.

Xiaomi Mi Smart Sensor Set: buy it or not?

79 € they are not too many for a simple and all in all complete sensor kit, but you must already have a plan in mind, one other than "I need a burglar alarm". In my opinion, it becomes more versatile and effective only by purchasing other products from the Xiaomi family, such as Yeelight lamps or Mi Home Security cameras. At that point you could really create interesting automations.
