Canal Plus termination: how to unsubscribe free of charge

You had a Canal Plus subscription that you now wish to terminate. Whatever the reason, the termination process at Canal Plus itself is simple. However, we must be sure to know the perennial and outcomes of such an approach to do things properly and above all to avoid unpleasant surprises.

La termination of a Canal + subscription necessarily involves sending a termination letter. This must be sent a maximum of one month before the anniversary date of the subscription. It is not possible to terminate with an e-mail sent via the Internet.

Cancel your Canal + subscription on expiry

If you have a current subscription and are bound by a one-year commitment, the subscription is automatically renewed on expiry (tacit renewal). The termination procedure is mandatory if you no longer wish to benefit from Canal services.

As specified above, terminating your subscription requires a letter which must be sent at least one month before the current period, failing which the subscription is systematically renewed for one year. The termination letter must be sent by post to Canal + or Canalsat - Termination service - TSA 86712 - 95905 Cergy-Pontoise Cedex 9.

Canal Plus termination before the deadline

Any unsubscription request intended to take effect before the anniversary date is considered as a termination before expiry. In this case, any termination exposes you to costs or penalties for breach of contract. These correspond to the sum of the monthly payments due up to the commitment period. In other words, if you have a subscription for € 39,99 per month and decide to terminate 6 months before the end of the annual deadline, you pay penalties of € 39,9 x 6, or € 239,40.

However, it is possible to avoid these costs under certain specific conditions provided for by law:

  • In the event of the death of the subscriber, over-indebtedness, imprisonment, disability or disabling illness
  • In the event of moving abroad or to an area not covered by the operator
  • In the event of modification of the terms of the contract by the operator (price increase, etc.). The subscriber has up to 4 months to indicate his desire to unsubscribe free of charge following these possible unilateral modifications.

You will need to provide supporting documentation with the termination letter if any of the conditions listed above are met.

Termination after the anniversary date

The Chatel law requires operators to send a letter (postal or electronic) to subscribe within a period ranging from three to one month before the end of the contract. By receiving this letter, the customer is thus informed of the possibility of canceling his Canal Plus subscription on the expiry date. The only possibility for the subscriber to terminate free of charge after the anniversary date is the case in which Canal has not sent him this letter.
