PlayStation Classic Review: Is It Really Worth Your $ 99? Let's try to explain it to you.

We tried it in preview PlayStation Classic, the first mini-format console from Sony PlayStation. 99 euros to take home a piece of your childhood. But is it really worth your money? Let's try to explain it to you in ours review.

PlayStation Classic: the mini console for nostalgics

PlayStation Classic and a real nostalgia operation. When I opened the package, I found myself in my hands one really tiny console. A compact piece of plastic, a perfect replica of the PlayStation that many of us owned as children. With one difference: it really fits in the palm of your hand, it is no coincidence that it is 40% smaller than the original.

On the upper part of the console there are 3 buttons: "reset", "power" and the "open" button which is used to virtually change the discs. Do you remember that mammoth titles like Final Fantasy VII had multiple discs? That's when the console asks you, all you have to do is press the "open" button and continue your adventures.

The two controllers, on the other hand, are connected through a classic USB socket disguised as a controller input. There are obviously no memory cards to insert. Of course, you can save the game through 15 different virtual save slots.

Games included and main menu

Once you turn on the console by pressing the "power" button you will be hit by the classic boot screen that I do not know about you but - to me - as a child she has always been a bit worried. Just to refresh your memory, we're talking about this:

After the screen boot, the main menu will load where you will find all the line up completa di PlayStation Classic, composed by 20 among "the best games of the time". You can find them all here.

  • Battle Arena Toshinden
  • Cool Boarders 2
  • Destruction derby
  • Final Fantasy VII
  • Grand Theft Auto
  • IntelligentQube
  • Jumping Flash!
  • Metal Gear Solid
  • Mr. Driller
  • Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee
  • Rayman
  • Resident Evil™ Director’s Cut
  • Revelations: Person
  • Ridge Racer Type 4
  • Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo
  • Syphon Filter
  • Tekken 3
  • Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six
  • Twisted Metal
  • Wild Arms

You will agree with me that there are many that will make you tear down and are still balanced as half of these allow you to play in company and take advantage of the second controller included in the package .. Obviously there are many great absentees: from Medievil to Spyro, from Crash Bandicoot to Tomb Raider. This happens - most likely because there are some special commercial deals with publishers, especially when it comes to recently released reboots like Spyro and Crash Bandicoot. In short, the line-up is nostalgic but certainly not the best.

The main menu also plays on the nostalgia effect because all the icons are pixelated as well as the buttons on the screen. The settings are not who knows how many. In any case, scrolling through the various titles, just press enter to start the game.

Once you start the game, you will find that the playback of the title has two black bands on the right and left, this is because the games of the time were running in 4: 3 while our modern TVs have an aspect ratio of 16: 9 or 21: 9 for monitors.
In any case, 9 out of 20 games run at 50Hz in Europe and North America, although the NTSC versions enjoy full 60Hz compatibility.

Ah, just to be clear: almost all the games are not localized in Italian, just as the ones you played with in the 90s were not localized.

[If, on the other hand, you want to buy it to play it for real, put yourself there in front of the TV and play for hours and hours, maybe you will end up getting bored pretty quickly because the graphics of the retro games - in the long run - are capable of boring.

In short, the choice is yours. There is no universal answer to this dilemma. Think about it anyway before proceeding with the purchase.

Availability at a price

PlayStation Classic, the mini console from Sony, will be available on the market from 3 December 2018 to a recommended price of 99 euros. Good nostalgia to all.
