Something in the Rain, the “portrait” of Korean everyday life: Why look at it?

Why look at it is the new Tech Princess column, edited by Mattia Chiappani and Veronica Lorenzini, in which they reveal why you should watch a certain TV series: the chosen series of the day is Something in the Rain, Korean TV series available on Netflix.

Premise: it is only available audio in Korean. This means that you will have to fight, if you are not familiar with them, with subtitles.

Is Something in the Rain the portrait of Korean everyday life?

Something in the Rain, also known as Pretty Sister who buys me food, is one South Korean TV series of 2018. It is one of the first Asian TV series I have ever seen in my life and it has won with flying colors a place in my little heart.

The series revolves around Yoon Jin-ah, a woman in her thirties who is going through a moment of crisis due to her own recent breakup and at the accumulated stress in the workplace e Seo Joon-hee, a guy who works for a video game company and who returns to Korea after spending three years abroad. Joon-hee is the younger brother in Seo Kyung-seon, la best friend by Jin-ah: the two, after many years, meet again and the woman will begin to see the boy with different eyes.

Stop, stop, I already know what you are thinking: the "usual" romantic TV series. Yes, this is an element that is part of the series but what I hope to make you understand is that Something in the Rain it goes beyond simple romance and it is probably one of the best creations in the world.

The series consists of 16 episodes with a duration that varies from an hour to an hour and a half, like every - or almost - Korean TV series that we find around. I know, it is a bad blow but you must know that if it will conquer you immediately as it did with me, these sixteen episodes they will finish in the blink of an eye.

And believe me, I know it well. I remember finishing it in about 3 days and I literally wanted to hit myself. I kept repeating to myself: “Come on, do you think you're going to finish it immediately? Now what are you going to do with your life, how can you recover from a similar series? "

Yes friends, Something in the Rain is a tv series that it is difficult to forget - and in fact I'm watching it for the thirteenth time.

Maybe you know it or maybe not but the Koreans, compared to the Chinese for example, are more tragic e deep. This means that usually in TV series it will be talked about important issues, delicates and which reflect in some way life in South Korea. In this TV series there are many elements presented and we do not focus only on the relationship of the protagonists, which in any case is the basis on which the whole story is built.

There is talk of problems in the workplace, in particular of abuse of womenand stiffness of families in Korea. For example, we will see Jin-ah often argue with her mother why she is not married yet. Sometimes they will also argue because the mother does not want to accept the boy just because he belongs to one different social class and does not have a renowned job.

We will see how much family support can be all at the same time, nothing.

Usually this happens to me with Koreans: I fall in love with the characters, I enter the story and I learn a lot. Yes, that's right, I learn. They always tend to want to tell viewers something detail of their life, of that country so far away from us and this thing is only from to appreciate ed to admire.

A flower that blooms slowly

Okay, I'm biased maybe because anything slightly romantic makes me happy like a kid in a candy store. This story, however, is different and it's special for this very reason.

The love story between Jin-ah and Joon-hee is totally different from those seen around: in these sixteen episodes, the director shows it to us as if it were a flower that slowly blooms. We will see just this slow but intense love that is born, grow up and who wants to open up to the world, but cannot do so fully due to various obstacles.

È un pure loveclear and personally I believe I have never seen so much sweetness and intensity as in this series. We are shown a crystalline love that despite the difficulties it encounters, it is not in the least contaminated by the negative vibrations that want to crumble it.

Even when it feels like it is bound to break, it won't happen because both of them will work hard, showing the world what they are made of. Also, an element to take into consideration is the fact that in each episode other themes are explored.

This detail, in addition to making this flower even more intriguing and beautiful to admire, allows us to observe the general plot from several angles. The story between Jin-ah and Joon-hee is the basis of the plot ma there are not only them. The director reminds us of this and allows us to get to know each character, doing an extraordinary job.

Another really interesting element is that everything that is represented in this series reflects reality, there is no scene that comes close to the unbelievable. Even the relationship between the protagonist and her mother, which seemed exaggerated to me, I discovered to be truthful. Apparently there are still families in Korea who care about the rango or of class.

Last but not least, the colonna sonora.

My friends, if you could see the smile on my face right now. It seems to have been made specifically for this series, for those certain scenes e those situations that embrace the viewer, transporting him within the series.

In addition to fitting perfectly, it is a varied soundtrack: we can find Carla Bruni, Bruce Willis, Rachel Yamagata and many others. Such a mix strange but that works divinely. I mean, how many of you knew that Bruce Willis was also a singer? I was not aware of it and was amazed.

So why should you look at it?

Something in the Rain, the “portrait” of Korean everyday life: Why look at it?

I think Something in the Rain is the perfect series for all those people who want to see something sincere, true pure, which can also transmit a pinch of magic. I have seen plenty of series, of all kinds, with more or less interesting plots but I had never had a similar product before.

I'll keep saying this every day for the rest of my life: Koreans have a gift. They tell a story and it is always difficult to forget it.

This series is able to catapult us into a hard world with delicate themes, in a way it throws them right in the face. At the same time, however, it is as if there offered his hand with a smile. It makes us understand that bad things, exhausting situations, sooner or later will end and that happiness awaits us around the corner.

It is probably a strange concept to be connected to a TV series but it is what it transmitted to me. I am sure that, in one way or another, he will do it with you too.
