In recent years, technology has made great strides: we have foldable smartphones, computers with two screens and appliances that respond to voice commands. However, one sector seems to have remained unchanged, immune to progress. We are talking about printers, both inkjet (those with cartridges, to understand) and laser. But things are about to change. HP in fact he launched the series on the market Neverstop Laser which offers a truly convenient and ingenious charging system. We talk about it in this review dedicated to the model Neverstop Laser 1202nw, one of three currently available on the market.

Suitable for any environment

As this is a completely new product, we would have expected a slightly more generous size. HP, however, managed to achieve a really compact printer, which can adapt to any kind of desk.

Neverstop Laser 1202 nw it also boasts a particularly minimal design: you can therefore place it in domestic environments or in any office without difficulty and without fearing contrasts with the rest of the furniture.

To characterize it we also find the paper tray, which houses up to 150 pages, and scanner which turns the product into a multifunction printer, i.e. capable of scanning and copying documents. Much of the operation can be done by exploiting the small upper LCD display and keys which we find immediately below. Don't worry, this does not mean that you will always have to get up to print or scan the files; HP Neverstop Laser 1202nw relies on software HP Smart - available for PC and Mac - and the homonymous application, which we find both Google Play Store and App Store.

No traditional toner cartridge, there is the maxi-syringe

But let's get to the heart of this printer: the charging system. As anticipated at the beginning, we have neither the traditional toner nor the cartridges but an internal reservoir that holds enough toner powder to print thousands of pages. On the front of the printer we therefore have an indicator that shows how much toner is left like this; once it drops below 50% you can refill, this time without having to open the printer, remove the old toner and replace it with the new one. HP has devised a refill kit that looks like a maxi-syringe and that allows you to fill the tank effortlessly, without getting dirty and without wasting time. All you have to do is lift the scanner for convenient access to a proprietary entrance to slide your syringe into. In 15 seconds you'll have all the toner powder you need again.

The benefits of HP Neverstop Laser 1202 nw

The advantages offered by HP's new innovative system are quite obvious. As anticipated, we can save time, avoid toner waste and above all we do not have to gut the printer to start using it again. We don't even have to wait until the tank is completely empty to refill it: we can refill at any time, so as not to run dry in time of need.

Then there are obvious economic advantages.

A quick calculation is enough to understand that the average cost per page decreases and that the initial investment - the cost of the printer - is quickly amortized. The refill kit in fact costs much less than a traditional toner cartridge and guarantees many more prints.

Finally, we also have some advantages in terms of eco-sustainability. Of course, you will have to dispose of the maxi-syringe in a landfill, but we do not have circuits and plastic parts that cannot be recycled as happens with toner. And if you are particularly attentive to the environment, know that HP Neverstop Laser 1202nw uses low-emission technology, it is designed to consume little energy and it's made of 25% recycled plastic, a percentage that rises to 75% for the kit.

Print quality and functionality

There are 3 HP Neverstop Laser printers:

• HP Neverstop Laser 1202nw, in sale at 299,00 euros.

Ours, the last on the list, stands out for the presence of the scanner and the WiFi module, elements that make it truly complete. You can then print, scan and copy either by connecting the printer via USB or via WiFi. The latter is the most convenient solution and no, it does not require long preliminary operations to be able to use the remote control. The configuration is almost elementary: find a place for your HP Neverstop Laser, plug it in and then use the HP Smart app to finish the installation. In a few minutes you will be up and running.

HP Smart is really well done: the interface is comfortable and intuitive, the various functions are just a click away and checking the status of the printer is very easy. You will hardly prefer to use the display and keys on the HP Neverstop Laser 1202nw rather than rely on the app.

Let's not forget that HP Smart allows you to take advantage of a series of options not present on the printer control panel. Two of the ones we liked the most: Camera Scan e Smart activities.
The first allows you to use your smartphone's camera as a real scanner you can then send the scanned document to the printer without going near the product.
The second instead allows you to create routines which may include printing, emailing, or saving a copy to the cloud.
Let's take an example. Think about the expense report. With Smart Activities, you can set up a routine to scan receipts and receipts and then upload everything to OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Drive, Box, Evernote or Quickbooks.
This automates a process that would otherwise take more time and more clicks.

But what and how does this product print?

First of all we will have it all in black and white, which is perfectly suited to those who print pages and pages of Word sheets, contracts, tables, price lists and so on. In short, if you don't have to have color images, black and white is always the best and cheapest solution.

For printing you can use the classic A4, including those of 120 grams, but it is also compatible with any envelopes - but you have to load them one at a time - or labels for packages.

The speed is not among the fastest on the market (we are around 20 pages per minute) but the print quality is really good, with documents that are perfectly legible and without smudging. We lose something only with the printing of black and white images because the grays are not managed perfectly but nothing really worrying, especially if your normal business involves copies and prints of classic documents.

We really liked the HP Neverstop 1202nw: it is suitable for everyone, has an elegant and compact design, offers good print quality and above all allows you to save in the long term.
Try to remember all those times when you thought a new printer was cheaper than buying a new toner or new cartridges. Well, with HP Neverstop things change radically.

The new printer of the US company thus revolutionizing a sector that in recent years has offered us products that are practically all the same, bringing to the market an economical, clean and fun charging system, without giving up all the good things we have seen so far, such as WiFi Direct or the excellent HP Smart app.
