For the test drive of the Volkswagen Passat 2020 the German car manufacturer opted for a mixed route, partly on the motorway and partly on the scenic roads of the Adige Valley. How did she behave? Really very well on both sections, thanks to some interesting news concerning technology and autonomous driving.

Volkswagen Passat 2020 test drive: performance

Let's get right to the point: how does the 2020 Passat behave once it is put on the road? Really very good on any kind of route, it is no coincidence that it is one of the most popular cars when it comes to corporate fleets.

On the highway it is very pleasant: stable, quiet and really comfortable. To assist you we find the new Travel Assist, a set of technologies that allow you to access second level autonomous driving.

Once we reached the panoramic stretch of the Adige Valley, the car surprised us thanks to excellent road holding. In short, curves and hairpin bends - even the most inaccessible - do not disturb this Passat.

All this being able to count on an extremely spacious luggage and on a passenger compartment that allows passengers and driver to travel comfortably. On the outside, the designers have opted for a slight facelift which modified the front and the grille. We also have new Full LED optical groups, both front and rear, and new colors: Lapiz Blue, Bottle Green e Sea Shell Gold. On the other hand, the measures and proportions remained unchanged.

An intuitive technology and network connection

We also find some news inside: there are new decorative elements, new fabrics and redesigned panels. Add to this a new instrumentation and the multifunction steering wheel, available as standard.

Important changes have also been made at the technological level. The first is theinfotainment MIB3, a modular platform that helps you customize the driving experience and puts the new one at your disposal Online Connectivity Unit, to be connected anytime, anywhere.

Impossible not to mention the Natural Voice Control, to control the functions of the Passat in complete safety, andApp-Connect Wireless, which allows you to access a wealth of information on almost every detail of the car.

A new one is also making its debut Digital cockpit - 8 or 9,2 inches - with which you will be able to keep useful information under constant control. Plus, with the new service mobile key, your smartphone will become the key to your Volkswagen Passat 2020, which can also be shared with your friends.

Travel Assist

During our trip we were constantly assisted by the aforementioned Travel Assist, standard across the entire range. This puts at your disposal a lot of ADAS: so we have the Traffic Jam Assist, which with its Stop & Go function assists the driver in queuing situations, theACC Predictive, which adapts the speed according to the detected road signs and the GPS position, but also the Front Assist, with pedestrian recognition brakes automatically, and the Lane assist actively keeps the car in the lane. Practically the Volkswagen Passat 2020 drives itself.

The driver assistance systems also guarantee a lot of safety during every maneuver, from the moment you get into the car to the moment you get off. The new Emergency Steering Assist will avoid dangerous skids during swerving maneuvers, acting directly on the brakes while Il Side Assist supports and assists during reversing maneuvers or lane changes; the Proactive protection system recognizes dangerous situations and intervenes automatically to limit the damage resulting from a collision and the Park Assist actively supports the driver when parking.

Volkswagen Passat 2020 test drive: the two variants

With the new Volkswagen Passat, the family is enriched with two interesting variants. The first is Passat GTE,  with plug-in hybrid propulsion. On the outside, the GTE is recognizable by the 18-inch Monterey light alloy wheels, the trapezoidal bezels for the exhaust system and the side inserts with the GTE lettering (at the height of the front pillars). The interior of the Passat GTE is characterized by a number of details, such as the seats upholstered in fabric with blue elements and the steering wheel covered in perforated leather.

La Passat Everything Rack instead it is based on the standard equipment of the Executive trim and has been designed for all motorists who travel a lot for work or privately, accustomed to using their car not only on paved roads. Basically a mix between station wagon and SUV. Thanks to a special off-road mode, modified suspension with greater ground clearance and 4MOTION permanent all-wheel drive, the Passat Alltrack is perfectly at home even on less conventional surfaces. Passat Alltrack is also the ideal solution for those looking for a comfortable and fast car for long journeys.
